John
Hull
Colonial Coin
John Hull (December 18, 1624 - October 1, 1683) was America's first mint master. This pence (enlarged to show detail) was stamped from steel dies he created while a silversmith in Boston. I was charged to unfold the top portion of the coin to make it more attractive. This was tricky because the coin was hardened and I could only go so far to improve its appearance. Annealing (softening) the coin would have dramatically changed the patina which I suggested to the customer should remain intact. |
