Before & After
Reed & Barton Sterling Serving Spoon

This spoon came to me for conservation. The first image shows the piece after it's been rinsed of any particulate and ready for cleaning.

I then allowed the spoon to sit in warm soapy water using 100% plant-based Better Life Dish Soap for five minutes. This allowed any remaining grime to soften. Holding the spoon under warm running water I used a horsehair brush to remove the remaining grime then dried the piece prior to the next step.

Using Herman's Simply Clean Collectors Silver Polish on cotton balls, I removed the tarnish while  maintaining the factory-applied patina in the low-lying areas. Using this gentle polish also maintained the gold plating. The spoon was then rinsed of polish under warm water and immediately dried with a cotton towel. Total cleaning and polishing time for the front and back was 10 minutes. If I had initially started polishing prior to cleaning, I would have ground the grime into the silver. It  takes substantially less time to polish your silver after grime has been removed.
