This tool that
removes dents from trays is called a spring hammer. I purchased this
rare device for $50 when Manchester Silver in Providence closed. At
one time there was a wrought iron spring mounted on top of the pivot;
the expansion spring gives the same "bounce" to the hammer
head. I made an adjustable wooden support that can be moved back and
forth with a height adjustment to support larger trays. The
entire spring hammer is adjustable to accomodate any metal thickness,
for the hammer head must land absolutely flat. The anvil and hammer
face must stay covered when not in use to keep its surfaces pristine.
If a piece of dust or rust gets between the hammer head or anvil and
silver, it will leave an impression! |
